How to Grow Corn

Corn is cooked best straight from picking. If you harvest corn and submerge it in hot water, you will get the best-tasting, starchy snack that you can even partner with steak for a hearty dinner.

If you intend to grow corn yourself, you can easily do so with the help of this useful guideline.

How to grow corn does not have to be a daunting task. You just need the right environment and enough room to grow it.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to grow corn for your perusal.

Step 1: Choose a planting site. A suitable soil bed for corn is a moist, water-retentive, and compost-rich area.

Work the soil beforehand to ensure that it is as healthy as it can be. Lots of fertilizers and manure will do the trick.

Step 2: You may choose to plant corn seeds or a plant, depending on the weather conditions in your area. If you are living on a site that allows only a short growing season, starting out on a plant is advisable.

You can buy corn plants from a nearby nursery. If you are in an area where a longer growing season is allowed, you can start on corn seeds.

Step 3: Dig holes in your soil. Make sure that you keep the seeds or plants at least four inches apart. Make rows and rows of corn plants as much as your garden area allows it.

Step 4: Put a protective covering around your corn plants to ensure that they retain moisture and deter pests. Water your plants regularly every week.

Make sure that you do not put too much water in it since that could wash away the pollen. Make sure that you keep track of your corn’s fertilizer intake as well. As it grows, it will constantly need nutrients to encourage further growth.

Step 5: Your corn is ready for harvesting when the husks turn from light green to dark. The silks will also start to dry and turn brown around this time.

You can also see kernels appearing on the top of the corn ear when it is ready to be picked. Naturally, you will need to wait about 20 days after the silks start to appear before you pick your corn, ready for cooking.

To make sure that you have enough supply of fresh corn on your kitchen counter, make sure that you plant at least every two weeks. That would be enough to replenish your supply of this tasty vegetable.
